Zoho vs Odoo for US small businesses
Both can run a whole company. The real difference is who looks after the machinery underneath.
Odoo is open source: you can host it yourself, read every line of code and bend it with Python modules. Zoho is pure SaaS: nothing to host or upgrade, with US payroll and US sales tax already in the box. We are a Zoho partner led from Glendale, so we lean one way, and we still show where Odoo wins.

01The short version
Is Odoo or Zoho the better fit for a US small business?
If you sell, ship, bill and pay people in the US and want no servers to babysit, Zoho usually fits better. If you build products on a shop floor, need your own hosting, or have developers who want the source code, Odoo earns a serious look.
- Open sourceOdoo Community is free to download and run on your own server; Enterprise adds paid apps and support
- SaaS onlyZoho runs every app in its own data centers, so there is no hosting choice and no hosting chore
- US built inZoho Books handles sales tax and 1099s, and Zoho Payroll covers all 50 states
02Ten jobs, one at a time
Where does Odoo pull ahead, and where does Zoho?
Odoo wins on manufacturing depth, code freedom and hosting choice. Zoho wins on the US back office and on how little upkeep it asks of you. Pick a job to see both answers.
Manufacturing and MRP
Zoho Inventory handles kits and light assembly with composite items. Routings, work centers and shop-floor screens have to be built in Zoho Creator.
A full manufacturing app with multi-level bills of materials, work orders, work centers, and quality and maintenance apps next to it.
Custom code and source access
Deluge scripts, Creator apps and Catalyst functions extend the suite, but you never touch Zoho’s own source code.
The code is open. Developers write Python modules that change any part of the system, on Odoo.sh or your own server.
Hosting choice
One option: Zoho’s cloud, with US accounts kept in Zoho’s US data centers.
Three options: Odoo Online, the Odoo.sh platform, or any server or cloud account you control.
US payroll
Zoho Payroll runs pay in all 50 states, pays and files federal, state and local taxes, and posts each run to Zoho Books. Zoho One includes its Standard plan.
Payroll coverage follows Odoo’s country localizations. Many US companies on Odoo pay staff through an outside payroll provider, so check your states first.
US sales tax and 1099s
Zoho Books works out sales tax from the customer’s address and tracks and e-files 1099s without an extra tool.
Address-based US sales tax usually runs through a connected tax service, set up and paid for on its own.
Version upgrades
Zoho ships changes into the live apps. There is no version number to migrate to, only release notes to read.
A new major version lands every year. Custom modules must be ported and retested before a database can move up.
Sales pipeline and CRM
Zoho CRM brings Blueprint stage rules, territories, forecasts and four paid editions, so sales can grow without a rebuild.
A clean, simple pipeline that hands off neatly to the Sales and Invoicing apps. Deeper sales rules mean Studio work or a module.
Effort to go live
The apps arrive configured and connected, so most of a project is your process and your data, not infrastructure.
Projects often need a technical partner for hosting, modules and data, especially once custom code is in scope.
Partner and developer pool
A global partner network as well, but Deluge is Zoho’s own language, so fewer developers already know it.
A large worldwide partner network, an app store of community modules and every Python developer as a possible hire.
Online store and marketplaces
Zoho Inventory syncs stock with Shopify, Amazon, eBay and Etsy, and Zoho Commerce covers a store of your own.
Website and eCommerce apps live inside the same database, with connectors for the big marketplaces.

How do Zoho and Odoo charge you?
Zoho publishes a price per user or per organization for every app and for the Zoho One suite. Odoo charges per user on its paid plans, while its Community edition carries no license fee but moves the cost into hosting and developer time.
Zoho, billed yearly
Zoho One, all-employee$37per employee a month, every employee licensed
Zoho One, flexible user$90per user a month, license only who logs in
Zoho CRM on its own$14 to $52per user a month: Standard $14, Professional $23, Enterprise $40, Ultimate $52
Zoho Books on its own$15 to $240per organization a month, Standard to Ultimate, with a free plan for very small firms
Zoho Inventory on its own$29 to $249per organization a month, priced by order volume, free plan up to 50 orders
Odoo, the pricing model
- Community editionNo license fee. You pay for the server, backups, upgrades and every hour of developer time.
- One app freeA single Odoo app on Odoo Online at no charge. Adding a second app moves you to a paid plan.
- Standard planPer user, per month, all apps, hosted on Odoo Online only. No Studio and no external API.
- Custom planA higher per-user rate that adds Studio, multi-company and the external API, plus a choice of Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own server. Odoo.sh hosting is billed on top.
- First-year offersOdoo often discounts a new subscription for its first year, so ask for the renewal rate in writing.
USD, before tax. We leave Odoo’s numbers off this page because its rates change by region and by promotion; on a first call we price both sides for your real headcount. Our own work is quoted as one fixed price inside a signed BRD, whichever way you go.
04Three-year upkeep planner
What will the next three years ask of your team?
License price is half the story. Tell the planner how you would run Odoo and it lays out the recurring jobs on each side, year by year.
Sample plan. Amber chips are jobs your team or partner owns; teal chips are handled by the vendor. Real effort depends on your modules, integrations and users.

06Straight answer
When would we tell you to stay on Odoo?
Whenever moving would cost more than it saves. These are the cases where we say so on the first call, even though we only sell Zoho work.
- Your shop floor runs on Odoo manufacturing. Routings, work centers and quality checks that operators already trust are hard to rebuild without losing something.
- Your edge lives in custom Python modules. If your own developers keep them current with supported versions, that investment is worth protecting.
- You must host it yourself. Zoho has no self-hosted edition, so a hosting requirement ends the conversation.
- You are halfway through an upgrade. Finish the version move first, then compare with a clear head.
- Most of your entities sit outside the US. If Odoo’s localizations already fit those countries, the US advantages above matter less.
Somewhere in between? Many companies keep Odoo for production and run Zoho CRM, Desk and Books beside it, joined through Odoo’s external API and Zoho Flow.
07Moving from Odoo to Zoho
What happens to each Odoo app when you switch?
Most standard Odoo apps have a direct Zoho home. Manufacturing logic and custom modules get rebuilt, and a few areas need a decision first. Tap a tag to see the note.
The path off Odoo, in four steps
- Discovery callFree and 30 minutes: your Odoo version, edition, hosting, apps and custom modules.
- Migration AssessmentWe read your database and modules and list what moves, what is rebuilt and what is retired. It may be paid; if so, the fee is credited in full when you go ahead.
- Migration BRDA fixed price, a stopper date and the move order, signed by each department lead and the project owner.
- Sample, then cutoverYou sign off a sample import. On cutover day Odoo turns read-only and stays readable until you confirm.

08Zoho vs Odoo questions
Zoho or Odoo: what US owners ask us
These come up around an Odoo renewal, a version upgrade or a new US entity. Bring your app list and we will answer against it.
Is Zoho cheaper than Odoo?
It depends on how you would run Odoo. Odoo Community has no license fee, but you pay for hosting, upgrades and developer time. Odoo’s paid plans charge per user. Zoho One lists at $37 per employee a month on yearly billing, or $90 per user on flexible licensing, with hosting and upgrades included. Compare three years of license, implementation and upkeep, not the first invoice.
Is Odoo really free?
The Community edition is open source and free to download and run. Odoo Enterprise, the edition behind Odoo Online, is a paid per-user subscription, and some apps and features are only in Enterprise. Free software still needs a server, backups, security patches and someone to upgrade it.
Can Zoho handle manufacturing the way Odoo does?
For kits, light assembly and batch tracking, yes: Zoho Inventory covers them with composite items, lots and serials. For multi-level bills of materials, routings, work centers and shop-floor screens, Odoo is ahead, and on Zoho we build those in Zoho Creator. If manufacturing is the heart of the business, compare carefully before you move.
Does Zoho One include US payroll?
Yes. Zoho One includes the Standard plan of Zoho Payroll, which runs payroll in all 50 states, pays and files federal, state and local taxes, and posts each pay run to Zoho Books. Payroll on Odoo depends on its country localizations, so US companies often connect a separate provider.
Can we self-host Zoho like Odoo?
No. Zoho is cloud only, and US accounts are kept in Zoho’s US data centers. If a contract or regulator requires hosting you control, Odoo on-premise or on your own cloud account is the better fit, and we will tell you so.
How do we move from Odoo to Zoho?
It starts with a discovery call, then a Migration Assessment of your database and custom modules. Scope, a fixed price and a stopper date go into a Migration BRD that your department leads sign. We run a sample import for your sign-off, and Odoo turns read-only on cutover day.
Can Odoo and Zoho run side by side?
Yes. A common split keeps Odoo for manufacturing and moves sales, service and accounting to Zoho CRM, Zoho Desk and Zoho Books. We connect the two through Odoo’s external API, which needs Odoo’s Custom plan or a self-hosted database, and Zoho Flow or Deluge on the Zoho side.
Which is easier for a small team to run day to day?
Usually Zoho, since there is nothing to host and no version upgrade to plan. Odoo Online comes close but rules out custom Python modules, while Odoo.sh and self-hosting add freedom and chores.
