No server to patch at 2 AM. Just small functions that wake up for an event, do one job well, and go back to sleep.
AWS Lambda runs your code in response to something happening: a webhook arrives, a file lands in S3, a clock ticks over. You pay per request and per millisecond of run time, and nothing while it sits idle. Our Glendale-led team designs those functions, moves old cron jobs and scripts onto them, locks down their permissions, tunes memory so the bill stays small, and connects them to Zoho CRM and Zoho Books.
01Is Lambda right for this job?
Lambda shines for short, bursty work triggered by events. It gets awkward for anything that runs nonstop, holds memory between calls, or needs more than fifteen minutes. Here’s the honest split we walk clients through before writing a line of code.
Zoho, Stripe or Shopify calls your endpoint a few hundred times a day. A function behind API Gateway or a Lambda function URL answers each one and costs close to nothing between calls.
A PDF or photo lands in an S3 bucket and Lambda resizes it, extracts text, or files it against the right customer record.
EventBridge Scheduler replaces the crontab on that one old box nobody wants to reboot.
Messages pile up in Amazon SQS during a rush; Lambda scales out to drain them, then scales back to zero.
That’s the hard ceiling per invocation. Long video renders or big data loads belong on containers, AWS Batch or Step Functions splitting the work.
When a workload stays loaded around the clock, a right-sized container on Fargate or an EC2 instance with a Savings Plan often wins on cost. We’ll run both numbers.
02Lambda consulting services
Serverless is easy to start and easy to make messy: fifty functions, no tests, every one running with admin rights. These five pieces of work keep a Lambda estate small, safe and cheap.

PHP cron tasks, Python scripts on a VPS, Heroku Scheduler jobs, Azure Functions. Rewritten or repackaged as functions, then retired from the old host.

One execution role per function with only the actions it calls, API keys in Secrets Manager instead of environment variables, and VPC access only where a database needs it.

More memory also buys more CPU, so the cheapest setting is often not the smallest. We measure, try Arm (Graviton), and add SnapStart or provisioned concurrency only where users feel the wait.
Before and after numbers from your account
CloudWatch alarms on errors and throttles, on-failure destinations so a bad event isn’t silently dropped, X-Ray traces for slow calls, and runtime upgrades before AWS deprecates yours.

03One webhook, traced
A rep marks a deal Closed Won. Zoho CRM fires a webhook, and a Lambda function drafts the matching invoice in Zoho Books. Below is that single request drawn as a trace, the way AWS X-Ray shows it, once on a cold start and once warm. The first call after a quiet spell pays for setup; the next ones skip it.
Cold startfirst call in a while
≈ 830 ms billed ≈ 800 ms
Warmcontainer reused
≈ 380 ms billed ≈ 350 ms
Sample timings for illustration. Real numbers depend on the runtime, package size, memory setting and how fast Zoho answers.
A workflow rule on the Deals module posts the deal ID and amount to an HTTPS endpoint, with a secret token we add so strangers can’t call it.
Lambda creates a fresh execution environment, starts the runtime and runs the code outside your handler. Since August 2025 AWS bills that phase for ZIP functions on managed runtimes too, so lean imports pay off twice.
It reads the Zoho OAuth token from Secrets Manager (cached for warm calls), then asks Zoho Books to create a draft invoice for the right customer.
A 200 goes back to Zoho, a structured log line lands in CloudWatch, and the environment stays around for a while so the next deal skips INIT entirely.
Cold starts bothering a customer-facing screen? Provisioned concurrency keeps a set number of environments initialized, and SnapStart restores Java, Python and .NET functions from a snapshot. Both have their own charges, listed in the pricing section below.
04Lambda cost calculator
Set how often the function runs, how long each run takes and how much memory it gets. The math uses AWS’s published US East (N. Virginia) list prices, including the monthly free allowance and the volume tiers. Start from a sample workload or drag your own.
Sample estimate of Lambda charges only. API Gateway, data transfer, CloudWatch Logs, ephemeral storage above 512 MB and provisioned concurrency are billed separately. The free tier is per AWS account each month and shared by every function in it.
05AWS Lambda + Zoho
Zoho can call out to a URL and accepts calls through its REST APIs, which makes Lambda a natural middle layer. These four patterns cover most of what US clients ask us to build between the two.
Pattern A
Pattern B
Pattern C
Pattern D
Not every hand-off needs AWS. A no-code connection between two Zoho apps is often a job for Zoho Flow, and small functions that live beside Zoho data can run on Zoho Catalyst. When the logic belongs with your AWS app, Lambda is where we put it. More on the CRM side: our Zoho CRM work.
06AWS Lambda pricing
Two meters do almost all the work: a flat fee per request, and a compute charge in GB-seconds, which is memory times run time. Arm functions cost about a fifth less per GB-second than x86. A monthly free allowance covers many small business workloads entirely. These are the US East (N. Virginia) list rates.
| What’s metered | x86 | Arm (Graviton) |
|---|---|---|
| Requests | $0.20 per 1 million requests | |
| Compute, first tierx86: first 6 billion GB-s a month · Arm: first 7.5 billion | $0.0000166667 per GB-second | $0.0000133334 per GB-second |
| Compute, second tierx86: next 9 billion · Arm: next 11.25 billion | $0.0000150000 | $0.0000120001 |

| Free each monthper account, shared by all functions | 1 million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds | |
| Ephemeral storageonly above the free 512 MB | $0.0000000309 per GB-second | |
| Provisioned concurrencywhile enabled, plus its own duration rate | $0.0000041667 per GB-s kept ready · $0.0000097222 per GB-s run | $0.0000033334 per GB-s kept ready · $0.0000077778 per GB-s run |
INIT time counts. Since August 1, 2025, the cold-start setup phase is billed for every on-demand function, including ZIP packages on managed runtimes, so trimming dependencies now lowers the bill as well as the wait.
Free tier caveat. Functions running with provisioned concurrency don’t draw on the free allowance, and the other services around a function (API Gateway, S3, logs) have their own meters.
Our side of the bill. Lambda work with us is scoped per function and per integration, written into a signed BRD at a fixed price before we deploy anything to your account. AWS charges you for usage directly; we never mark it up. The first call costs nothing.
List prices in USD, before tax, for US East (N. Virginia). Other US Regions such as Ohio or Oregon may differ, and AWS revises Lambda rates now and then, so we price against your Region on the day we plan.
07Lambda questions
Cold starts, time limits, costs and how Lambda compares with servers, containers and Zoho Catalyst. If yours isn’t here, bring it and a rough request count to the first call.
AWS Lambda runs code in response to events without you managing servers. Typical uses are webhook endpoints, small APIs behind API Gateway, processing files when they land in S3, scheduled jobs that replace cron, and workers that drain SQS queues. You pay per request and per millisecond of run time, and nothing while the function is idle.
In US East (N. Virginia) Lambda charges $0.20 per million requests and $0.0000166667 per GB-second of compute on x86, or $0.0000133334 on Arm, with lower rates at very high volume. Every account gets 1 million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds free each month. A webhook handler that runs 100,000 times a month at 400 ms and 256 MB stays inside the free tier; the calculator on this page shows other cases.
A cold start happens when Lambda has to create a new execution environment, start the runtime and run your initialization code before handling a request. We reduce it by trimming dependencies, giving the function enough memory, moving heavy setup out of the hot path, and, where users notice the delay, using SnapStart or provisioned concurrency.
A single Lambda invocation can run for up to 15 minutes (900 seconds). Work that takes longer is usually split into steps with AWS Step Functions, or moved to containers on ECS or AWS Batch.
For spiky or low-volume work, Lambda is usually cheaper because you pay nothing between requests. For a service that is busy all day, every day, a right-sized EC2 instance or a Fargate container with a Savings Plan often costs less. We model both from your real request counts and durations before recommending one.
If the code mostly reacts to Zoho records and stays small, Zoho Catalyst can be simpler to run because it sits next to your Zoho data. If the logic belongs with an app or database you already run on AWS, or needs services like S3, SQS or a private VPC, Lambda is the better home. We are partners on both platforms and choose per job.
Yes. A Zoho CRM workflow rule can post to an HTTPS endpoint, which can be an API Gateway route or a Lambda function URL. We add a secret token to the webhook, validate it in the function, queue the work if Zoho may send bursts, and write results back through the Zoho CRM API.
Often, yes. Arm compute is listed about 20% lower per GB-second than x86, and many Node.js and Python functions run on it without code changes. Functions with native libraries built only for x86 need testing first, so we benchmark before switching.
Lambda has managed runtimes for Node.js, Python, Java, .NET and Ruby, and supports Go, Rust and others through OS-only runtimes or container images. We mostly build in Node.js and Python, and keep runtimes upgraded before AWS ends support for older versions.
The first conversation is free. After that, each Lambda project is a fixed price written into a signed BRD that lists every function, trigger, test and alarm. Bigger moves off old servers may start with a paid discovery, which we quote up front. Your AWS usage is billed to you by AWS directly.
08How a Lambda project starts
We like to know every trigger, every downstream system and every failure path before the first deploy. A single webhook function can usually be scoped on the call itself; a fleet of jobs coming off an old server may need a short paid discovery, quoted before it starts.
Serverless projects run remotely for clients across the US, Canada and Latin America, with whiteboard sessions in our Glendale office for teams around Los Angeles.
