Design the API
Resource names, versioning, HTTP or REST per workload, custom domains on Route 53, and an OpenAPI file that becomes the contract your front end and partners code against.
Amazon API Gateway · AWS Partner · Los Angeles
One front door for every request, with a lock, a bouncer and a logbook.
Amazon API Gateway is the managed AWS service that receives calls to your API, checks who is calling, slows down anyone sending too much, and hands the request to Lambda, a container or another AWS service. We design those routes, pick between HTTP and REST APIs, lock them down, and connect Zoho webhooks to the code that runs behind them.
01Is API Gateway right for this?
API Gateway shines when traffic is bursty, the code behind it is serverless, and you need auth and rate limits without running a server for them. It is a poor fit for slow, heavy requests or for steady traffic so large that a load balancer costs less. Here’s how we sort it on a first call.
02API Gateway services
Most API Gateway jobs we take on are one of five things. A new SaaS backend usually needs all five; an existing API often just needs the security and logging pieces done properly.
Resource names, versioning, HTTP or REST per workload, custom domains on Route 53, and an OpenAPI file that becomes the contract your front end and partners code against.
Lambda proxy routes, private links to ECS services in your VPC, and direct calls into SQS or Step Functions with no code in between, all written as infrastructure as code.
JWT authorizers with Amazon Cognito, Lambda authorizers for webhook secrets, IAM auth for internal callers, AWS WAF on REST APIs, and mutual TLS where a partner asks for it.
An Express or Flask server on one EC2 box, a self-hosted Kong, or an old REST API that should be a cheaper HTTP API. We move routes in batches behind the same domain.
Access logs and CloudWatch alarms on 4XX and 5XX rates, sensible stage throttles, caching on hot REST endpoints, and a monthly look at what each route costs.
03One request, five lanes
A deal closes in Zoho CRM and Zoho posts it to your API. In well under a second it passes five checkpoints. Each lane below shows what the gateway does, a sample log line, and what the caller gets back when that lane says no.
A workflow rule fires on Closed Won and posts the deal ID, amount and owner, plus a shared secret in a custom header or parameter.
POST /hooks/zoho-crm · 1.2 KB
Unknown route: rejected, no code runs
The route key is matched, then a small Lambda authorizer compares the header to a secret in Secrets Manager. The answer is cached for a few minutes.
authorizer: allow · 4 ms
Bad secret: 401 or 403
A token bucket counts requests against the stage and route limits you set, under the Region’s account quota.
bucket: 9,412 tokens left
Too fast: 429, try later
The function validates the payload, writes the customer to your database and drops a welcome job on a queue, so slow steps never block the reply.
lambda: 182 ms · 128 MB used
Code error: 502, alarm fires
Zoho gets a 200 with the new account ID, and an access-log line lands in CloudWatch with the caller, route, status and latency.

04Try it · Sample API
Pick a method, type a path, choose what should answer it and how callers prove who they are. The table below fills in like the route list in the AWS console, and flags combinations that only work on one API type. It’s a planning sketch with sample routes, nothing gets deployed.
| Route key | Integration | Auth | Remove |

Sample only. Feature notes follow the AWS docs for HTTP and REST APIs; the real choice also depends on logging, caching and how your partners call you, which we check together before anything is built.
05API Gateway + Zoho
Zoho apps can call any HTTPS endpoint, from a CRM webhook to a Deluge invokeurl line. API Gateway gives those calls one guarded address on your AWS side. These are the four routes we build most often.
A Zoho CRM webhook hits a POST route, a Lambda creates the customer in your product and writes the new ID back to the deal.
Zoho Books posts the payment to an HTTP API route that sends it straight into SQS. Workers pick it up at their own pace, and nothing drops during a deploy.
A Zoho Creator app calls a GET route with an API key, and REST caching keeps repeat lookups off the database.
Zoho Flow triggers your API on events from dozens of apps, while access logs show exactly which flow called what.
Only need a few functions that live next to Zoho data? Zoho Catalyst has its own API gateway and can be less to run. We build on both, so the choice is about your stack, not ours.
06API Gateway pricing
You pay per call or message received, with no minimum fee, plus data sent out at EC2 transfer rates. HTTP APIs cost the least per request; REST APIs cost more and add usage plans, caching, WAF and request validation. These are AWS list prices for US East (N. Virginia).
HTTP API
$1.00 per million requests
REST API
$3.50 per million calls
WebSocket API
$1.00 per million messages
Quick math: 10 million calls a month comes to about $10 on an HTTP API and $35 on a REST API, before data transfer and whatever runs behind the route. The AWS Free Tier covers 1 million HTTP API calls, 1 million REST API calls, 1 million WebSocket messages and 750,000 connection minutes a month for eligible accounts.
API Gateway list prices in USD, before tax; Lambda, SQS and logs behind each route are billed on their own meters, and we size those too. Designing and building your API with us is quoted once, as a fixed amount written into a signed BRD, and only the first call is free of charge.
07API Gateway questions
HTTP vs REST, timeouts, 429 errors, securing webhooks and cost. If your question is about a specific API, bring the route list or OpenAPI file to the call and we’ll read it with you.
Amazon API Gateway is the AWS service that sits in front of your backend and handles incoming API calls. It routes each request to Lambda, a container, an HTTP endpoint or another AWS service, checks who is calling, applies rate limits and logs every call. Teams use it for app backends, partner APIs, SaaS webhooks like Zoho CRM, and WebSocket apps.
HTTP APIs are the newer, simpler and cheaper option at $1.00 per million requests in US East (N. Virginia), with JWT and Lambda authorizers and direct links to services like SQS. REST APIs cost $3.50 per million calls for the first 333 million but add API keys with usage plans, response caching, AWS WAF, request validation and mock responses. We pick per API, and sometimes run both.
In US East (N. Virginia) HTTP APIs are $1.00 per million requests for the first 300 million a month, REST APIs are $3.50 per million for the first 333 million, and WebSocket APIs are $1.00 per million messages plus $0.25 per million connection minutes. Data transfer out is billed at EC2 rates, and REST caching is billed per hour by cache size.
API Gateway suits APIs that need per-route auth, rate limits, API keys or a serverless backend, and traffic that comes in bursts. An Application Load Balancer is often cheaper for heavy, steady traffic to containers or EC2, since it bills by the hour and capacity unit rather than per request. Some setups use both, with the load balancer behind a private API Gateway integration.
We add a shared secret to the Zoho CRM webhook as a custom header or parameter, then check it with a Lambda authorizer that reads the secret from AWS Secrets Manager and caches the result. Requests without it get a 401 or 403 and never reach your code. We also set throttles on the route and keep access logs in CloudWatch.
REST API integrations have a 29-second timeout by default, which can be raised for Regional and private REST APIs through a quota request. HTTP API integrations can run for up to 30 seconds. Anything slower, like a big export, should accept the request, put the job on a queue and let the caller check back.
A 429 means a throttle limit was hit. API Gateway uses a token bucket per account and Region, with default quotas AWS publishes for each Region, plus any stage, route or usage plan limits you set. We size those limits to real traffic, ask AWS for quota increases when needed, and make callers like Zoho retry with backoff.
Yes. HTTP APIs have first-class integrations for SQS, EventBridge, Kinesis Data Streams, Step Functions and AppConfig, and REST APIs can call most AWS service actions through an AWS integration. Sending webhooks straight into SQS is one of our favorite patterns, because it removes code and never loses a message during a deploy.
If the logic is small and works mostly on Zoho data, Zoho Catalyst can be simpler, since it has its own functions and gateway next to your Zoho apps. If your product, database or other services already run on AWS, API Gateway with Lambda keeps everything in one account. We are a Zoho Catalyst Partner and an AWS Partner, so we recommend whichever fits.
Our first call about your API costs nothing. After that, the routes, security, tests and cutover are written into a signed BRD at a fixed price with a delivery schedule. AWS bills you directly for API Gateway and anything behind it.
08Starting an API Gateway project
A handful of webhook routes can usually be scoped on the first call. A public partner API with keys, quotas and a migration off an old server may need a paid design phase first, and we’ll price that before it starts.
