Shopify Markets setup for US brands ready to sell abroad

One store, priced in pounds for London, in yen for Osaka, and still in dollars back home.

Shopify Markets is the part of Shopify that lets a single store sell to other countries with local prices, languages, domains and duties. Our team, led from Glendale, plans which countries to open first, sets up each market, translates what matters, decides how duties are charged, and makes sure every foreign order lands in Zoho Books and Zoho Inventory in the right currency.

01Is Shopify Markets enough?

What is Shopify Markets, and is it the right way to go international?

A market in Shopify is a group of countries that share settings: currency, language, domain, price adjustments and which products are for sale. You can run many of them from the store you already have. For most US brands taking their first steps abroad, that beats cloning the store per country. For a few, it doesn’t.

Where it works well

  • Testing demand in one or two countries. Canada or the UK can open on the theme you already pay for, and a market can be switched off just as easily.
  • Same catalog, different price tags. A percentage uplift per market covers shipping and duty costs without editing hundreds of products.
  • Shoppers who expect their own language. French for Quebec, Spanish for Mexico, German for the DACH region, all on one theme.
  • SEO in each country. Subfolders or local domains get their own URLs, and Shopify writes the hreflang tags for you.

Where we’d slow down

  • A completely different range per country. If Europe gets its own products, warehouse team and marketing calendar, a separate expansion store (on Plus) can be cleaner.
  • Regulated products. Supplements, cosmetics or anything with batteries may be blocked at the border no matter how neat the storefront looks. Check that before you translate a word.

02Shopify Markets services

What our Shopify Markets team sets up for you

International selling breaks in quiet places: a price ending in .37, an English return policy on a French page, a parcel stuck in customs. These five jobs cover them.

  1. 01

    Market plan

Which countries first, grouped how, served from which warehouse. Based on where your traffic and abandoned carts already come from.

  2. 02

  5. 05

    Domains and SEO

Subfolder, subdomain or country domain, redirects for any old international site, and a crawl after launch to confirm each version is indexed.

03Story · first market

How does a US store open its first market in Canada?

Canada is a common first stop for US Shopify brands: close, familiar, and a short parcel ride away. Here is the route a sample apparel brand in Los Angeles would take, five stops from “ships to Canada” to “sells in Canada.”

  1. Stop 1 Currency

    Prices in Canadian dollars

CAD switched on through Shopify Payments, a market uplift to cover the longer ride, and prices rounded so nothing reads CA$65.37.

    CA$66.00 on the product page

  2. Stop 2 Language

    French where it counts

English for most of the country, French published for shoppers in Quebec. Checkout text comes translated; product pages and policies are on us.

    EN + FR, one theme

  3. Stop 3 Duties

No surprise bill at the door

HS codes and country of origin added to each product, then duties and import tax estimated at checkout, so the courier never asks the shopper for money.

    Landed cost shown before paying

  4. Stop 4 Domain

    A Canadian address for search

Either /en-ca/ and /fr-ca/ subfolders on the main domain, or a .ca domain the brand already owns. Shopify adds the hreflang tags either way.

    yourbrand.com/en-ca/

  5. Stop 5 Go-live

Test orders, then open the border

Rates by province, a refund in CAD, a return label, and one order traced into Zoho Books with its exchange rate. Then the market is set to active.

    First Canadian order, reconciled

Sample route. Canadian sales tax registration and duty rates depend on your products and volumes, so your accountant or customs broker signs off on stop 3.

    05Shopify Markets + Zoho

Where does a pound, euro or peso order go after checkout?

Selling in five currencies is the easy part. Reporting on them is where finance teams get stuck. Shopify pays out in dollars while the order says pounds, so we wire each market into Zoho in a way your accountant can follow.

    StepWhereWhat we set upSample
1Shopify, UK marketOrder tagged with its market, currency and the presentment amount£37.00

The order sync itself is covered on our Shopify and Zoho integration page. Multi-currency accounting lives in Zoho Books, and stock across countries in Zoho Inventory.

    06Shopify Markets pricing

What does Shopify Markets cost a US store?

Markets itself comes with every Shopify plan, from Basic to Plus. What you pay is per sale: a conversion fee when shoppers buy in their own currency, an optional fee to collect duties at checkout, and, if you hand the legal side to Shopify’s Managed Markets, a per-transaction fee instead.

    ItemShopify MarketsWith Managed Markets
AccessBasic, Grow, Advanced, PlusIncluded in every planOnly for stores based in the continental US (plus some in Canada and the UK)
Currency conversionneeds Shopify Payments1.5% per transaction, built into the buyer’s price1.5% per transaction, built into the buyer’s price
Duties and import tax at checkout0.5% per transaction, optional, taken from your payout (Shopify lists 0.85% as its regular rate)No extra fee
Managed Markets feeGlobal-e acts as merchant of recordNot applicable3.5% per transaction, 3.25% on Plus, taken from your payout
Card processing on international ordersShopify lists a blended rate of 3.9% per transaction that varies by plan, card type and where the card was issued
Published languagesUp to 20 on Basic, Grow and Advanced, up to 30 on Plus

Managed Markets in one line. Global-e becomes the seller of record abroad, so it handles local tax registration, remittance and duties. You give up some margin and control over the checkout in return.

What our work costs. We price each market launch as a fixed project, with the countries, translations, duty setup and Zoho connections listed in a signed BRD before we change a single setting. Shopify bills its fees to you directly. The first call is on us.

Shopify’s published US fees in USD at the time of writing. Shopify adjusts cross-border fees and Managed Markets eligibility from time to time, so we re-check them against your order mix and home country before you switch anything on.

Fees, duties, domains, languages and what happens in Zoho. If your question is about a specific country, bring a list of where your orders come from today.

    What is Shopify Markets?

Shopify Markets is Shopify’s built-in tool for selling to other countries from one store. Each market groups one or more countries and sets their currency, languages, domain or subfolder, price adjustments and product availability, all managed from the same Shopify admin.

    Does Shopify Markets cost extra?

No, Markets is included on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. The costs come per sale: Shopify Payments charges a 1.5% currency conversion fee built into the buyer’s price, and collecting duties and import tax at checkout is an optional 0.5% per transaction at the currently listed rate, against a regular rate of 0.85%. Card processing on international orders is also higher than on domestic ones.

What is the difference between Shopify Markets and Managed Markets?

With Shopify Markets you stay the seller in every country, so tax registration and duties are your responsibility. With Managed Markets, Global-e becomes the merchant of record and handles tax remittance, local payment methods and duties, for a fee of 3.5% per transaction, or 3.25% on Plus. It is only open to stores based in the continental United States and certain stores in Canada and the UK.

Should we use subfolders or country domains for international SEO on Shopify?

Subfolders such as /en-ca/ are easiest and share the authority of your main domain, which is why we usually start there. A country domain such as .co.uk makes sense if you already own it and want a fully local look. Shopify adds hreflang tags automatically for either setup, so search engines know which version to show.

How many languages can a Shopify store have?

You can publish up to 20 languages on Basic, Grow or Advanced, and up to 30 on Shopify Plus. Translations are managed through Shopify’s Translate & Adapt app or a compatible third-party app, and your theme needs a language selector.

Can we charge different prices in different countries?

Yes. Each market can carry a percentage adjustment that raises or lowers every price, plus rounding rules so prices look natural in the local currency. Depending on your plan you can also set fixed prices for specific products in a market.

Do we need Shopify Payments to use Shopify Markets?

For local currencies and local payment methods, yes. Without Shopify Payments, shoppers abroad still see your store in their language but pay in your store currency.

How do duties work when a US Shopify store ships abroad?

Either the shopper pays duties and import tax to the carrier on delivery, or you estimate and collect them at checkout so the parcel arrives with nothing to pay. Collecting at checkout needs accurate HS codes and country of origin on each product, which we add during setup.

How do multi-currency Shopify orders show up in Zoho Books?

We record each foreign order as an invoice in the customer’s currency with the exchange rate stored, so Zoho Books can report it in dollars and match it against the USD payout from Shopify. Stock moves in Zoho Inventory from the warehouse assigned to that market.

How long does it take to launch a new Shopify market?

It depends on how many countries, languages and warehouses are involved and how much product data needs tariff codes. The signed BRD dates each part, from translations and duty setup to Zoho mapping and test orders, so you know the launch date before work begins.

    08How a Markets project starts

From a country shortlist to a signed launch plan

We want to know what you sell, where it ships from and which borders it has to cross before any market goes live. One extra English-speaking country can often be scoped on the first call. Five markets with translations and a foreign warehouse may need a short paid scoping phase, quoted before it begins.

Markets launches run remotely for US and Canadian brands, and we’re glad to meet in our Glendale office if you’re nearby in Los Angeles.
